A very reasonable-sounding plan I hear a lot: I’ll wait until this AI stuff settles down, then I’ll learn the version that sticks. No point learning a tool that changes every month.

It sounds prudent. It’s a trap.

The tools will keep changing. That’s not a phase; it’s the nature of the thing. If your plan is to start once it stops moving, you will never start. And while you wait, other people – no smarter than you – are getting fluent in exactly the way that compounds.

Waiting for a calm moment is a decision. It’s just one you’re making by default.

Here’s the reassuring part: the specific tool matters far less than the habit. The person who learned to prompt well on last year’s model didn’t waste their time – the instinct carried straight over. You’re not learning a product. You’re learning a way of working, and that doesn’t expire.
